The Vatnajökull entrance fee and vehicle charges
The Vatnajökull entrance fee question needs a distinction between a person entering a place, a vehicle using a service area and a guided activity. The park’s fee list checked on 5 November 2026 lists vehicle service charges for Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón. It does not list a general personal park ticket with adult, child and family tariffs. Use the vehicle category and the area you will actually visit to plan costs, rather than treating the national park as one attraction behind one entrance gate.
A tour price is a separate part of the budget. Some outings include a national park fee while parking at the meeting point remains separate. The local guided example on this page specifically excludes the Jökulsárlón parking fee. Read the tour overview for activity choices and the arrival guide for the road journey. Paying for parking gives access to the relevant vehicle service, not permission to walk onto glacier ice or take a guided activity.

Vehicle categories and payment as of 5 November 2026
The published vehicle charge is 1,110 ISK for cars with up to five seats and 1,440 ISK for vehicles with six to nine seats. Buses with ten to 21 seats pay 2,770 ISK; the 22 to 32 seat category costs 5,200 ISK, and buses with at least 33 seats pay 9,400 ISK. Motorcycles cost 450 ISK. These are the official list amounts checked on 5 November 2026, expressed in Icelandic krónur without a currency conversion.
Payment is valid until midnight on the payment date, with re-entry possible. A second chargeable park service area visited on the same date receives a 50 percent discount. The period follows the calendar date rather than a rolling full day from arrival. Number plates are recorded, and payment is available online or at a machine. Enter the vehicle details carefully and keep the payment information accessible. A P-card exemption requires an application and confirmation; displaying the card alone should not be treated as completed registration.

A guided visit with parking separate
This Jökulsárlón glacier outing includes local specialist transport and safety equipment; the lagoon parking charge is extra.
Drone rules depend on place and time
Recreational drone use is governed by the park’s area maps, time windows and wildlife protection rules. Askja and most Skaftafell areas are excluded from the general recreational possibility. At Jökulsárlón and Fellsfjara, heavily visited red map areas remain excluded all year. The national park’s drone information at vjp.is should be checked for the precise location before flight. A quiet-looking corner or an empty car park does not establish permission, and other aviation rules still apply in areas where park rules allow use.
For the permitted mapped areas at Jökulsárlón and Fellsfjara, the window from 22 October to 21 November is before 11:00 or after 15:00; from 22 November to 21 January it is before 12:00 or after 14:00. These are the rules checked on 5 November 2026 and apply only outside excluded map areas. Do not disturb animals, and stop immediately if disturbance occurs. Commercial photography and research require permission, with applications at least 30 days beforehand. Recreational windows do not replace that permission.
Overnight stays, paths and driving
Plan overnight accommodation separately from daytime parking. Restrictions on staying outside designated sites apply in Jökulsárgljúfur, the Askja protected area, Kreppulindir and the Hoffell and Heinaberg lowlands. Skaftafell has limited mountain-area exceptions that need local park guidance. A service-area payment is not an overnight camping arrangement. Use the accommodation area overview to choose a base rather than relying on an unplanned night in the vehicle after a long day of sightseeing.
Keep to designated routes and respect local signs. Driving off designated roads is prohibited; a damaged surface is not a reason to drive around it through the landscape. Professional specialist glacier transport does not give visitors permission to attempt the same journey in a rental car. For Skaftafell’s local walking and camping context, see Skaftafell paths and camping arrangements. Keep the local access rules separate from assumptions about what a vehicle can physically reach.
Glacier and lagoon safety
Enter glacier ice and ice caves only with a certified, locally knowledgeable guide. Crevasses, falling ice, collapse and floodwater create hazards beyond what can be judged from a viewpoint. A land trail towards an outlet glacier remains a different activity from stepping onto it. The glacier walking guide explains the meeting-point and equipment planning. The guided example here includes a local Super Jeep ride from Jökulsárlón to the glacier and back, while transport to Jökulsárlón and its parking charge remain separate.
At the lagoon, stay off lagoon ice and do not climb ice floating in water. Keep well back from the surf at the coast and supervise children. Where moving between lagoon and beach, the park directs pedestrians to the path under the bridge rather than walking over the road bridge. Jökulsárlón lagoon access and local visits covers that area. Before driving onward, consult road.is, vedur.is and SafeTravel.is; a paid parking visit says nothing about the safety of the next road journey.
Frequently asked questions
Does the parking payment cover 24 hours?
It is valid until midnight on the payment date, with re-entry possible. It is not a rolling 24-hour period.
Can I fly a drone anywhere in the park?
Permission depends on the mapped area, time window and wildlife rules. Excluded areas and other aviation rules still apply.
Does a guided activity include parking?
The example here excludes Jökulsárlón parking. Keep vehicle service charges separate from tour inclusions.
